James Bond-casino Royale (2006) Review

Posted by Tom Watson

Another James Bond movie made, another classic to add to your video collection. Nowadays, who isn't a fan of James Bond? This time, we have a new actor in the place of James, a British man by the name of Daniel Craig. I believe that he did a fantastic job as the main role, and they are already filming a new Bond movie with the same actor. Casino Royale is very different from your average Jame Bond flick. The action isn't as cartoonish, and the movie has a much darker feel than the others. For some, it's good news, and for others, it's bad news.

First the bad news, some girls will not have a fun time watching the movie. As they seldom look for dark, violent, and serious movies. I think that Casino Royale may have lost some female James Bond fans. I also think that the movie is missing a bit of emotion, as the new Bond is nearly emotionless. Which isn't a bad thing, I don't mind empty emotions in my movies, as long as the storyline and acting make up for it. But im not talking about my personal preference. The bottom line is that this years Bond, is nothing like the previous Bond. Some will like him, and some will not. It all depends on what you expect from a movie. In a nutshell, the ones who crave emotions from the main characters, may not like this movie. The ones who like more action, less talk, this film is for you.

I have a lot more to tell you on the good side of the film, before we get into the actual plot. There isn't as much action in the movie as all of the other Bond films, but it's more violent and ferocious. The storyline might be a little hard to follow, but after a few viewings, you gain the complete knowledge. Think of it like this: Each time you watch the film, you learn something that you didn't know from the previous viewing. A good amount of the movie takes place at a poker table. It may be a bit boring for some, but not for me. After all, who doesn't like to sit down and watch a very dramatic version of World Series of Poker? I didn't think so.

The film takes place in many different locations. From the Bahamas, all the way down to Europe. The locations make the theme of the movie change pretty rapidly. So why is the movie 2 and a half hours long? It's simply because a lot of things take place in the movie, various action scenes, information being discovered, which all leads from one thing to another, until the very dramatic ending, which I won't tell you. The main villian is very strange, and his role is more realistic than any other 007 film. What makes this film more realistic than the others, is how all of the events can actually happen in reality. Nothing over the top, and the events are similar to real life. No other action film I have seen contains such realistic events.

Overall, this is one of the better films of the James Bond series. It is one of the most unique action films I have seen, and I would definately recommend it to action movie fans, and James Bond fans. People from all over the world can enjoy this film, as it is likeable by many people. Casino Royale has been in theatres for 2 weeks, and has made a total of $94.2 Million, and is one of the most successful Bond films. If you are going to see an action movie in theatres, what can be better than this? Nothing.

Using on an Online DVD Store for buying and renting movies will give movie buffs the ultimate in selection and convenience. Often, when going for a specific rental, consumers arrive just as the last available movie went out the door, only to be returned days later, when the night and urge are long gone. Top Six Benefits Of Pilates Exercises

Posted by Tom Watson

Pilates is the exercise of choice for dancers, gymnasts, and a host of famous Hollywood celebrities, and now it finds itself firmly entrenched in the mainstream. So why is pilates so hot?
Pilates incredible popularity can be traced to the fact that it provides its faithful practitioners with benefits that you simply can't get through traditional aerobics/strength training format.

1. Makes You into Muscle Man
If want a long, lean look without bulky muscles, but with all the strength. Would you like to build strength and endurance without getting the muscle man look? If so, pilates may be just what you have been searching for.

There's a reason that pilates is the exercise of choice for gymnasts and professional dancers. Most conventional workouts tend to create bulky muscle. Why is this? In most workouts, the emphasis is placed on repetition and building strong muscles.

This causes already-strong (think: big) muscles to get even strong, and thus bigger. Pilates does not rely on frequent repetition, and thus no overgrown muscles. Pilates focuses on the whole body, not just on sections of muscles.

2. Increases the Strength of Stabilizer Muscles
There are many benefits that one can achieve through a proper use of the pilates program. One of the most significant points of the pilates program is it’s ability to increase the strength of stabilizer muscles that may not commonly be worked out in a standard exercise program.

Also, since pilates stresses the use of graceful and fluid movements, it can be a great way to get a better sense of the kinesthetics of your body. The sense of body that you can achieve through pilates is quite significant, and many find that they are better able to balance themselves regardless of the position that they are in.

3. A Mind-Body Workout That Strengthens Your Whole Body
Another one of the benefits of Pilates is that it engages the mind and enhances body awareness. Like yoga, tai chi, and Asian martial arts, Pilates is not just a workout for your body. Joseph H. Pilates studied yoga, martial arts, and other ancient mind-body activities and included a strong philosophical foundation into the practice of Pilates.

Pilates not only helps tone your body, but your mind and spirit as well. The smooth, precise and flowing movements of Pilates are designed to make you more mindful of your body.

Breath movement is also emphasized to put you in touch with how breath moves through your body. Pilates has been demonstrated to reduce stress, anxiety, and helps lift depression. The mind-body connection is fundamental to the study and practice of pilates.

4. Pilates Strengthens Your Core like No Other Exercise
Another one of the benefits of Pilates is that the increased amount of strength that one can achieve in the ‘core’ of the body. The term core refers to the muscles in and around the area of the abdominal muscles and the back.

Proper breathing control is also stressed in pilates, adding to the numerous list of benefits that one can attain through regular use of the exercise program.

5. Prevents You from Future Injuries
Pilates strengthens your body and helps prevent future injuries. Pilates helps to condition the whole body, not just certain muscles. This helps balance the muscle and strength of the body. Since no set of muscles is ever over or under trained, there is less risk for injury. The body becomes more fluid and supple, protecting against injury.

6. Helps You Become Efficient With Your Body
Last, but not the least one of the benefits of Pilates is that it teaches you how to become efficient with your body. Very few exercises can help your body become more efficient in its movement.
Why is efficiency so important? Being efficient means that your body moves in a way, that is smoother, safer, and less prone to injury. By practicing pilates on a regular basis, you can train your body more to move in a much safer and more efficient manner.

Benefits of Pilates for Older Adults

The benefits of pilates have been particularly noted in older adults. Older adults are more likely to suffer from symptoms of arthritis, including stiff and painful joints. Pilates practice has also been lauded for its ability to help prevent injury.

Even adults undergoing serious rehabilitation therapy can use Pilates to increase their range of motion and overall muscle strength. But is Pilates safe for all adults? Who should avoid participating in a Pilates program, and who is more likely to benefit from the program?
Consult your medical professional if you have any doubts about your pilates program. If you are suffering from severe degeneration or physical pain, you should take extra care before beginning a pilates program.

You should never feel pain while practicing pilates. If you do, you know that there is something wrong. Don't be afraid to pull back if you feel overwhelmed.

Pilates was designed to progress naturally from one movement to another. If you feel stopped at one movement, don't give up. Start at the beginning and work your way back to the areas you found most challenging.

Other Benefits of Pilates

  • Tone and build long, lean muscles without bulk.
  • Reduce stress, relieve tension, and boost energy through deep stretching.
  • Restore postural alignment.
  • Create a stronger, more flexible spine.
  • Increase joint range of motion.
  • Improve circulation.
  • Heighten neuromuscular coordination.
  • Offer relief from back pain and joint stress.
  • Correct over-training of muscle groups which can lead to stress and injury.
  • Enhance mobility, agility and stamina.
  • Compliment sports training and develop functional fitness for daily life activity.
  • Improve the way your body looks and feels

Exercise Your Anxiety Away

Posted by Tom Watson

Physical exercise does more than keep us physically fit. It can be a key element in reducing anxiety. Did you know that exercise has proven anxiety-reducing benefits?

Here’s a brief list of some of the benefits of exercise specifically for anxiety sufferers. Exercise:

  • Releases “feel-good” endorphins and neurotransmitters that improve your mood.
  • “Burns off” stress by metabolizing neurotransmitters created during the stress response.
  • Balances blood sugar levels for up to thirty-six hours after exercising. This minimizes symptoms triggered by low blood sugar.
  • Likely makes the stress reaction system more efficient.
  • Could help you be significantly less affected by stress over the long-term by changing your body's automatic stress response. Exercise reduces the amount of adrenaline and other neurotransmitters released during stress that create symptoms.
  • Coordinates the movement between the arms and legs to help regulate brain waves.
  • Relaxes you by releasing muscle tension.
  • Improves blood flow to your brain, bringing additional sugars and oxygen, which may be needed when you are thinking intensely.
  • It's likely that a chemical that is released in the brain during aerobic exercise helps the body mend itself from some of the harmful effects of stress.
  • Exercise, when done regularly, increases your sense of self-control over your health and well-being, which in turn decreases anxiety.
I know it's tough to even think about exercising when anxiety symptoms drag you down. I used to feel the same way. Boy, was I surprised to discover that exercise made a dramatic difference for me. (The key is starting gradually if your symptoms are intense -- even one or two minutes of walking in your house a few times a day is a great start!)

Most anxiety sufferers mistakenly believe that their anxiety symptoms prevent them from exercising because they feel physically overwhelmed and fatigued. The truth is that exercise is one of the best tools you have to turn the tables on your anxiety symptoms. If you're fatigued, exercise will energize you!

Start slowly and gradually build the length of time that you exercise. Walking is one of the simplest exercises because it's easy, does not require lots of equipment, and you can do it just about anywhere.

When you're getting started, decide on a length of time that feels very do-able to you -- whether it's one minute, ten minutes, or more. Gradually build on that foundation. Increase the length of time and the pace of the exercise over several weeks. To maximize the anxiety-reducing benefits, make it a long-term goal to do thirty minutes of aerobic exercise three or four times a week.

Fitness Workouts: 3 Misconceptions You Need to Know about

Posted by Tom Watson

So you’ve finally decided to put a check mark beside Go to the gym” or some other version of it on your list of New Year’s resolutions from five years ago. Congratulations! Now that you’ve taken that all-important step, it’s important that you get the best out of your fitness workouts. Whatever your goals may be-- sweating it out with exercises to lose weight quickly or targeting fast abs with intensive ab workouts"let’s clear out these three misconceptions that you might have about fitness workouts.

#1: For truly effective fitness workouts, you need to spend money.
The equipment and inspiration (from being surrounded with buff bodies and people determined to have buff bodies) afforded by a gym can ensure"not guarantee-- success at achieving one’s fitness goals. I say can and not does because we all know that getting a gym membership does not guarantee success, and neither does home exercise equipment. There are many varieties of fitness workouts you can choose from that do not involve spending money. Outdoor activities like biking and running are perfect for outgoing people. Strength training and yard work are just a few of the many ways to workout at home. Decide on your fitness goals, know what exercises or activities to do and what is best to eat in order to achieve them, and download or modify some printable weight loss charts for guidance, and you’re good to go. At the end of the day, it’s your determination that will guarantee success, not expensive equipment.

#2: Fitness workouts are pointless if you don’t go on a diet where you eat as little as possible.
The fact is that when you eat too little in the effort to lose weight, your body considers this a threat to its survival and responds by storing more fat in order to survive. Also, once you decide that you can’t survive without food (surprise, surprise), you either start eating the usual amount of food or start eating more than you used to from having felt deprived of food during your period of ”insanity.” Either way, the body interprets this as a mere respite from the starvation and responds by storing even more fat than before in anticipation of another starve-fest. Now that’s when fitness workouts become pointless.

#3: The longer and harder you workout, the more muscles you gain.
The truth is that after some time, the body gets used to a workout routine and muscle growth reaches a plateau. At this point, your muscles will refuse to grow unless you introduce variation into your workouts. Also, training too long, too often, and too hard can actually cost you muscle mass. For instance, if you do mostly ab workouts every day, it won’t give your muscles time to heal, which they need in order to grow.

These are just some of the misconceptions people have about fitness workouts. There are many more, so don’t just take any workout-related advice that comes your way. Ask and learn. Making fitness workouts a part of your lifestyle is one of the best decisions you could ever make in your life, so it would pay to be as informed as possible.

Before trying any exercise for cycling or a weight loss program, it is important to firstly consult with your general practitioner or physician with a view to establishing your current fitness levels and whether or not you are at risk of medical problems arising from beginning a course of exercise. Remember that whilst you might feel fine, underneath it is always possible that there could be a number of problems that have lay undetected until now and could be subsequently triggered by picking up the pace with your exercise program.

Firstly, you fitness for cycling program should begin with a few light stretches and maybe even a jog, to make sure your muscles are warmed up for physical activity. After that, climb on board your bike and get cycling. The Passion Of The Christ (DVD) Review

Posted by Tom Watson

The most controversial film of 2004, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ was widely derided by critics and detractors as a two-hour anti-Semitic pornography/horror flick, complete with splattering blood and arduous torture. But among the Christian community (of which I consider myself a part) and open-minded people who actually saw the film, The Passion stands alone as the most eloquent expression of God's love for mankind ever to grace the big screen.

The Passion certainly is violent, but not anymore violent than similarly rated films of the past ten years. But despite contentions by some evangelical Christians that everyone should see this film, I don't think young children should see it. This movie is for mature audiences only, and I think anyone under the age of sixteen should have a full understanding of the previous events underlying the main focus of the film before viewing it.

The entire movie was filmed in the original Aramaic with English subtitles. This enhances, rather than detracts from, the film's enjoyment because it creates an emotional aura of mystery and sacredness to the subject. Since most people are at least vaguely familiar with the storyline, you won't find yourself distracted by reading subtitles as one might think. With just the opposite effect, you find yourself paying greater attention to the visual images displayed on the screen, and the power of the events unfolding before you is amplified several times over.

The Passion of the Christ combines the four written accounts found in the New Testament Gospels to create a vivid and powerful portrayal of the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
The film opens in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus of Nazareth (James Caviezel) is engaged in prayer, asking his Father to deliver him through the events soon to come. A satanic figure lurks in the shadows, dispensing a series of temptations and doubts. "No one man can bear the sin of the world. It's impossible. It's too much," the figure says. When Jesus refuses to give into Satan's temptations, his disciple Judas arrives to betray him to the Temple Guard.

The Temple Guard leads Jesus away in chains to face the high priest. While Peter and John weave their way through the crowd of onlookers, Jesus is questioned by an assembly of leading priests and teachers of religious law. When Jesus responds to their questioning by affirming that he is indeed the Son of God, the leaders hit him, spit on him, and mock him. They then take him before Pilate, hoping to have him killed.

Finding no fault with Jesus, Pilate nevertheless has Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip. This sequence is one of the most brutal in the film. James Caviezel is reported to have actually been hit by accident during the filming of this scene. The brutality and utter lack of empathy on behalf of the Roman soldiers is brilliantly illustrated. In my estimation, if you can make it through this scene, then the crucifixion scene should not be a problem.

Furthermore, Gibson's cinematic genius is apparent by his measured and precise use of flashbacks which draws the audience away from the violence in brief intervals so as not to cause an emotional overload. Flashbacks include Jesus teaching to a crowd about his power to "lay down my life, and take it back up again," Jesus washing the feet his disciples at the last supper, and Jesus as a playful personality interacting with Mary. One particularly powerful scene traces back to Jesus as a toddler. When he falls down and injures himself, a panicked Mary runs to his rescue. This flashback correlates with the film's portrayal of Jesus stumbling under the weight of the cross.

Overall, this ranks as one of the greatest films ever made. If you believe Jesus of Nazareth was the Biblical Messiah (which this film reviewer does), then The Passion illustrates the enormity of God's sacrifice. But even if you think Jesus was just a common man, this film serves a valuable purpose in that it underscores the barbarity of a human race that, more often than not, persecutes the innocent. Mel Gibson's greatest production to date is a film every student of history, philosophy, and human nature owe it to themselves to see…

The Incredibles (DVD) Review

Posted by Tom Watson

Nominated for four Academy Awards, and winner of Best Animated Feature Film of the Year, The Incredibles is one of the best animated films ever produced. A cross between Toy Story, Superman, and Office Space, it provides an endless array of action sequences, visual creativity, and well-delivered humor. Director Brad Bird (who's directed a few episodes of The Simpsons) not only creates a memorable film, but also voices one of the star characters of The Incredibles, Edna Mode. And following in the rich tradition of animated classics such Bambi (1942), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and The Lion King (1994), Walt Disney Pictures teams up once again with Pixar Animation Studios (with whom it collaborated on Finding Nemo) to produce a film both children and adults will love with equal verve and passion…

The Incredibles is set in the fictional cartoon township of Metroville (a hybrid of Superman's two homes, Metropolis and Smallville). Metroville is home to a number of miraculous superheroes who do everything from hunting down evil murderers to saving cats stuck in trees. Foremost among the superheroes is Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) who resembles Superman in both strength and style. Shortly after Mr. Incredible's marriage to the vivacious Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), a surge in civil lawsuits and other unwarranted torts are brought against the superheroes by the people they save, who cite numerous damages to their person as a result of being saved. The rash of legal action, and the strain it places on the local governmental budget, turns the tide of public opinion against the superheroes and forces them underground.

Harbored by the government witness protection program, Mr. Incredible has assumed a new identity - that of Bob Parr, an ordinary middle-class suburbanite who works as an Insurance Claims Specialist. Cowering in his cubicle, Bob Parr must deal with the typical travails of a 9-to-5 job, a boss he hates, and regulations he feels are immoral and hurtful to the company's clients. Meanwhile, Elastigirl is now known as Helen Parr, and she's grown comfortable in her new role as a housewife rearing the couple's three suppressed-superhero children - Violet (a shy girl with the ability to turn invisible), Dash (a cocky boy with the ability to run super fast), and Jack Jack (a baby with no as-of-yet-known super powers). All goes well until Mr. Incredible, anxious to return to life of helping people, is approached by a super secret government organization hoping to enlist his aid. When it turns out to be part of an elaborate conspiracy hatched by the evil Syndrome (Jason Lee), a former Mr. Incredible sycophant turned bad, Elastigirl and the entire Parr family must risk blowing their cover in order to save Mr. Incredible, and the world, from certain doom…

The Incredibles deserves a spot on anyone's list of the Top 100 films ever made. It really is that good. The musical score, composed by Michael Giacchino (know for his work on Alias), sneers at today's digital multi-track recording in favor of the old-school analog recordings of the 1960s in its effort to recreate the jazz-orchestra ambience often associated with the golden age of comic books. This attention to the form and detail of the story sets the tone for The Incredibles. And that's why the film is an absolute must-see. Its meticulous blend of sound and visuals, coupled with an utterly hilarious - if not ingenious script - makes The Incredibles a solid contender for the best film of 2004…

DVD Review - Doctor Who Season

Posted by Tom Watson

If you would like to watch a modern science fiction show with your family, then you should watch the 21st century Doctor Who series DVD. Since the fans saw this popular British TV series be taken off the air 15 years ago, this new updated version has had a lot of high expectations to live up to. After its release in 2005, fans and new audiences alike received it well and the current series now enjoys a large, growing following.

Christopher Eccleston brings a new, younger face, as the new Doctor, and this works well with the British pop star, Billie Piper, as Rose, Doctor Who's new traveling companion. This new doctor has a completely updated look and style, but has brought back the unique, silly sense of humor from one of the most popular doctors, Tom Baker. It has been said that Tom Baker's wit and charm have been accredited for bridging the cultural gap between British and American viewers back in the 20th century. Along with his appealing manner, Eccleston also provides this Doctor Who series with plenty of supense.

Along with the first rate CGI animation, this 21st century Doctor Who introduces a companion that has a boyfriend and a family life. This lets the audience have a chance to become involved with the sidekick character as well as seeing how Doctor Who reacts to human relationships as well as confronting and fighting off alien master minds from throughout the universe and time.
In the first show, the Doctor is pursuing an alien invader that is made of plastic, and accidentally meets his future companion Rose, in a department store in downtown London. The plastic mastermind alien plots to give store mannequins life and everything else that is plastic, in order to take over the planet. Rose gets locked in the store mistakenly, where she encounters several mannequins walking around, trying to kill her. How can a mannequin, even a walking one, hurt a human being? This is a surprise waiting inside for anyone who watches this DVD series.

Of course, the Doctor and Rose save the Earth and stop the plans of the living plastic assault in the first episode. In the next episode on the DVD, they travel on to the distant future to watch the end of the Earth and see the last pure human being. Later, Rose and the Doctor journey back into history to meet Charles Dickens in Victorian England and do some good old-fashioned ghost hunting.

Eccleston shows a side of the Doctor where more of his extreme side of his character is shown, that was not a part of the earlier series in the 20th century. Still, the time lord continues to be a magnanimous hero, finding new friendships and alliances with many kinds of creatures.

While Doctor Who is a sci-fi that does show many scientific possibilities, it also lets its audience see human nature at its best and worst without profanity and blood filled violence.
